Mohammed bin Salman Project for Developing Historical Mosques

The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques was announced in 2018 and has been tasked with preserving and restoring 130 mosques situated throughout the Kingdom.

During the first phase of the project, 30 mosques were carefully restored in slightly over a year at a cost of more than SAR 50M. Restoration specialists worked in close partnership with experts, who consulted with Saudi engineers to ensure that the character and cultural significance of each mosque was preserved.

His Royal Highness, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, views the restoration of the mosques as crucial to preserving the Kingdom’s religious identity.

The project has an important role in restoring mosques to allow Saudi Arabia to share its rich culture, history and society with the world, which is a main focus of Vision 2030. The successful first phase of the restoration project has created a valuable blueprint that will inform all future construction of mosques to follow authentic architectural designs.
