The Sakaka Solar Power Plant Project in Al Jawf is under the Ministry of Energy and was the first Renewable Energy project to be guided by The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
The plant uses solar energy through photovoltaic technology (PV) to generate electricity.
The project, implemented by the private sector, will see independent power producers (IPP) purchase power through an agreement with the Saudi Power Procurement Company for a period of up to 25 years.
The Sakaka Solar Power Plant consists of 1.2 million solar panels arranged over 6 km² of land. The site was meticulously selected by a specialized Saudi technical team to ensure the highest possible quality of electrical power production.
The Kingdom has distinct geographical and climatic advantages that make utilizing renewable energy sources economically attractive, supporting Saudi efforts to diversify the domestic energy mix – which support Vision 2030 goals.
The project set a new world record for low costs in the solar photovoltaic sector, which amounted to SAR0.08775 per kWh.
